SANDRIEN INVITES INIGO KENNEDY: The interview

On the 13th of June Sandrien will host her own night at Paradigm. For the first edition she invited Inigo Kennedy. Inigo is a pioneering and respected techno and electronic music producer and DJ. He is well known for always bringing technical and creative originality and skill to his work. Especially for this occasion Sandrien asked Inigo some questions to get to know him a little better.

Sandrien: Can you tell what you’ve been up to recently?

Inigo: Mostly juggling music, work and family life. It's become really hectic but that's also exciting. Somehow I've managed to find moments to make music and there are some projects firmly in the pipelines; for Token of course and some other things are shaping up too. Since working with Apelago in Berlin on bookings things have been going really nicely on that front too; a lot of great gigs, upside down weekends and travelling all over the place.

Sandrien: You have been around for a long time, your first productions stem from 1996, you’ve had over 100 releases. How have you seen the techno scene evolved over the years?

Inigo: Yeah, there are some great words I see from time to time like 'veteran', 'legend', 'stalwart' and worse :D That makes it sound like a long time for sure! It's been like a roller-coaster with some great ups and downs and a few bland plateaus. Personally I've never really followed the trend with my music making, even actively not doing so, so I've always found satisfaction in that side of things as I'm in my own world. That's become a strength over the years I think. The leap from vinyl to other media and the leap from hardware to software has really been noticeable in the effect it has had on both music production and music distribution but it feels like now this evolution has matured and the organic nature of things has been returning. That's great to feel. There's a sense of more creative risk around now and that's a very healthy state. The professionalism of venues and events has really matured although I suppose you could say there's another side to that as you lose the real sense of adventure and edginess that you might feel some years ago.

Sandrien: How have your own productions evolved over the years?

Inigo: That's really difficult to say as I think many of the same qualities shine through from my earliest productions to today; I think I've always balanced between emotion and energy. I feel like I have a better internal quality control now in that I understand how the sound needs to work in the context that it will be listened to and I've become stronger in my production from that side. It's a good sign that when I've attended mastering for my recent releases on Token that of course there is some magic added but also the fundamental balance has been  really good already.

Sandrien: We once met in Amsterdam when you were there not for the music but as a software developer for the financial area. Are there similarities between these two worlds as a software developer and an electronic music producer?

Inigo: Haha, I don't remember if I managed to escape from my suit before we met. I think so. Quite a clash of different worlds! I enjoyed our meeting a bit more than that one I had come from that is for sure! :D There are  definitely some similarities in terms of creative problem solving. For someone not involved in software development it might be hard to imagine but it can be quite an artistic and creative process. Certainly I've always been drawn to electronics and computers when it comes to music making and so I've been able to use similar skills and an understanding of how to get a good result. A difference maybe is that in software development I have to think about protecting from accidents but in my music making I deliberately entertain them.

Sandrien: Your techno is rich of melodies with IDM, electronica elements. Can you tell who are your musical influences?

Inigo: It would be impossible not to say Aphex Twin and maybe of all influences he leaves the clearest mark on my music - he is capable of such an awe inspiring combination of emotion, punk attitude, single-minded clarity, experimentation, precision, chaos, beauty, horror and so on. I suppose I was lucky to grow into electronic music as it evolved - feeling the wave of 80's electro shifting into the whole acid and rave scene and the emergence of the early Warp releases and the seminal releases like the 'Artificial Intelligence' compilation, Autechre's first album, etc. Although of course a lot of musical influences come from outside the UK it was very lucky to be growing up there where it really became focused and exploded into so many amazing fragments and different scenes and genres. I also had access to a great music department at the local library when I was growing up and that let me listen to so much music that I might not have otherwise discovered - that's something you don't think twice about now that the Internet provides an infinite amount of possibilities but then it was the radio, and DJ's like John Peel or Colin Faver, and the library that gave me access to influential music of all sorts.

Sandrien: Your latest releases mostly came out on the Belgium Token label, what does the label mean to you?

Inigo: Right now Token is my home base. That's how I feel anyway. I hope Kr!z feels the same way! I think all of us on the label felt the culmination of the years since things started when we took part in the Token Label Night at Berghain earlier this year. First of all it's an honour to play in that place but also it was such an incredible family feeling and an amazing coming together of people from all over the world just for this event. To be honest I felt really proud about that and proud to have played a part in the label too. Looking back and having been responsible for the first release on the label in 2007 it feels like the right place to be and more and more I'm feeling like the label and my music are on he same path which is great. Also, and not least, Kr!z does a fantastic job of developing the label too and that's really key in making it what it is right now.

Sandrien: In 2014 your Vaudeville album got released, can you tell something about the concept behind the album?

Inigo: Hmmmm. I've been asked that before and I think the concept was, realistically, oh crap we should maybe do an album and I've just had a baby boy and let's try and do this project in two months and... PANIC! That aside I  was quite clear in my mind to make an album from which every track I could play in a club and to an extent that focused things quite well. I also wanted to feel like I was making something reasonably timeless and to me the only way to do that is to really pull hard on the emotional strings - those are the things that make music timeless in my mind. It didn't leave me too many avenues to be distracted by and, on top of having the baby turn life upside down, there just wasn't time to disappear down potentially self absorbed rabbit holes of experimental noodling. I think I achieved my aims as I have played every track in clubs and many times and I've had some amazing feedback to the extent that some of the tracks have been the soundtrack to really strong experiences for people; people have told me they have cried with the music. To me that is a job well done.

Sandrien: You’re DJing, producing, have a family life, you’re a software developer, that sounds like a pretty full schedule. How do organise this and what do you like to do for relaxation?

Inigo: It does sound pretty full-on when I think about it or read it like a list. I have a pretty restless mind and I'm quite a perfectionist so that helps but at the end of the day although things are hectic it feels like a pretty exciting flow to be being pushed along on. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty exhausting as well but above all I think it's really lucky to have all these experiences and opportunities and especially the travelling. It's something I could never explain to my grandparents when they were alive and if anything it would be even more unbelievable now. As far as relaxation goes well sometimes I'm lucky to grab a few hours sleep in a dark hotel room at the right moment when I'm travelling but that's a rare treat! I do quite a lot of (olympic style) weightlifting believe it or not! It might not sound like the ideal way to relax or rest but it's definitely a good way to disconnect from things and I find it quite energising and it's a really different challenge to everything else. Plus it means I can enjoy eating and that's very nice way to relax too :)

Sandrien: You’ve played several times at Imprint at TrouwAmsterdam and you play a lot in the Netherlands, what do you think of the Dutch scene?

Inigo: The production levels in Holland always seem to be so good plus there is such a nice energy in the people I think. Trouw epitomised that and I'm really happy we met through that place and I'm so happy I got to play there before it closed too. I was super honoured when, for 22tracks, you picked 'Emitter' as the track that represented your time playing there over the years. It made me feel like that track will echo on in those walls for ever even when the walls are gone. This weekend will be my first time in Groningen though so I'm interested to see how it goes down up north :)

Sandrien: Can you name some tracks of yourself that you’re proud of?

Inigo: That's a tricky one; there's not really a track that I'm not proud of in some small way. The first vinyl release on Asymmetric, 'Cloudless' on Semantica, the remix of 'Ohio' by Czech band Khoiba that I did and of course on Token there are many such as 'Obsidian', 'Cathedral', 'Emitter' and finally 'Plaintive' from the recent album. There are so many tracks that a lot of people are maybe not so familiar with also but that I'm really proud of - a lot of the tracks that I released digitally (and for free) via my Asymmetric MP3 project, the electronica CD 'September Pieces' that I did for a small Swedish label Electronic Desert and so on.

Sandrien: And a track you’re going to play at Paradigm Groningen?

Inigo: Well, if you don't get there first I will definitely have to play 'Emitter' as that's one I know means a lot to both of us!
